Initiative

Housing the Future

A collaborative initiative contributing to improved housing outcomes in New Zealand through innovation, research and practical ideas — developed with partners, not in isolation.

Mission

Contribution, not slogans

Housing is a complex, long-running challenge, and no single business will solve it. This initiative is deliberately modest in its claims and ambitious in its intent: to contribute practical thinking, tested ideas and design capability to the people already doing this work.

We are interested in what can be measured — build cost, energy use, delivery time, resident experience — and in sharing those results honestly, whether or not they support our own assumptions.

Focus areas

Where we can help

Affordable housing

Exploring how design discipline, repeatable systems and efficient delivery can bring quality homes within reach of more households.

Modular construction

Off-site manufacture to reduce waste, weather risk and programme time while lifting consistency of build quality.

Sustainable communities

Thinking beyond the individual dwelling: shared space, energy, transport, planting and long-term maintenance.

Efficient building systems

Assessing envelopes, services and construction methods for performance, buildability and whole-of-life cost.

Research

Gathering evidence on what genuinely improves outcomes, and publishing what we learn — including what does not work.

Pilot projects

Small, measurable builds that test ideas in the real world before anyone proposes them at scale.

Roadmap

How the initiative will develop

Stage one — Listen

Conversations with builders, councils, iwi, community housing providers and residents to understand where the real friction sits.

Stage two — Research

Document delivery models, costs and building systems, and share findings openly with the sector.

Stage three — Pilot

Deliver a small number of demonstration homes with partners, measured against cost, performance and resident experience.

Stage four — Share

Publish results, refine the approach and support partners who want to apply it in their own regions.
